How Do I Get My Medical Billing Certificate?
In order to receive a medical billing certificate from an accredited medical billing and coding school, there are only a few federal requirements to be able to apply to a program:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Being proficient in English (written and spoken)
Other than these two things, there are no federal requirements for receiving a medical billing certificate. Also, for most states there are no state requirements since it is not required to be professionally trained to become a medical billing and coding specialist. The problem with not being professionally trained is jobs are scarce for specialists that do not have proper training.
The professional organizations for medical billing and coding do have specific requirements as well for being able to receive certification but these all vary by organization. There are no federal requirements for them as well. The main requirement for any specialist that has a certification is every two years the specialist must take a recertification exam.
Once a specialist has received a medical billing certificate, they can work within many different positions including the following:
- Medical coder
- Coding Specialist
- Coding Compliance Auditor
- Coding Analyst
- Revenue Cycle Coordinator
- Medical Biller
- Physician Billing Account Representative
- Reimbursement Manager
- Collection Supervisor
- Billing Compliance Specialist
There are many other positions that a specialist can have but these are only some of them. Also, there are different work environments that a medical billing and coding specialist can work in upon receiving a medical billing certificate. Some of these environments include the following:
- Physician offices
- Multi-specialty group practices
- Insurance companies
- Outpatient care facilities
- Government Agencies
Because there is so much flexibility with a medical billing certificate, it makes it easier for a specialist that is in the market for job placement. Also, if the specialist has a certification along with the medical billing certificate, it is even easier to get a job in the medical billing and coding industry.
The medical billing and coding industry is always a high demand industry. As long as there are hospitals, physicians’ offices, and other aspects of the medical industry, medical billing and coding specialist will be needed. Because it is a competitive and growing field, a medical billing and coding specialist needs to acquire the best education possible in this program area in order to compete with the other applicants for medical billing and coding jobs. If an applicant is not competitive, especially the applicants that do not have any type of formal training, then it will be very hard for them to find jobs in the medical billing and coding industry. That is why having a medical billing certificate is so important. The certificate proves that the applicant has received professional training, which means they have the knowledge and capability to handle any medical billing and coding job within the industry. Unfortunately, for applicants without proper training, it is harder to prove that they are capable of handling the tasks and have the knowledge needed without previous work experience in the industry.
