Medical Billing and Coding Continuing Education

As a medical billing and coding specialist, you will need to keep up with the almost constant changes that are occurring in the health care industry. The medical billing and coding profession requires annual continuing education, which is tallied as continuing education units, or CEUs.

According to the policy set forth by the American College of Medical Coding Specialists (ACMCS), after initial medical billing and coding certification is earned, certification can be maintained in one of two ways:

  • You can retake your medical billing and coding certification exam each year.
  • You can maintain your certification by earning CEUs through formal classroom training, attending seminars, webinars, or other ACMCS approved meetings.

Why do I need to earn medical billing and coding CEUs?

The American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) has set up the annual continuing education requirements for medical billing and coding professionals in order to maintain the standards of excellence across the board. Medical coders who were trained a decade or more ago, obviously need a way to keep up with the changes in the industry. The requirements set down ensure that every coder has the latest information and coding updates.

How can I earn my annual CEUs?

Continuing education opportunities are available in a wide variety of ways. The intent is to make it easy and convenient for medical coders to keep up to date. Here are some of the ways you can earn your annual CEUs:

  • Live Workshops: Medical billing and coding workshops are held in seminar style and taught by qualified, skilled professionals. The average workshop lasts about three hours and will earn up to 6 CEUs. ¬†Quizzes are a part of every workshop, so be sure to take notes and participate when possible.
  • Online Webinars: Convenient and easy, webinars are available at various times for your convenience. They are generally interactive and interesting events which present the latest information on the topic provided.
  • On Demand Events: If you can’t find a workshop or webinar that works with your current schedule, on demand events provide immediate access to presentations and workshops that have been pre-recorded. Depending on the site you visit, broadcasts can be viewed online or downloaded as presentation slides or podcasts.
  • National Conferences: The national conference is held annually by the American Academy of Professional Coders. It is their signature event and is packed with information. Breakout sessions include hands-on expos, keynote speakers, exhibitions, and other educational opportunities. The conferences are held in major cities across the nation.

Opportunities to earn CUEs toward your continuing education are available at cost and also free of charge. Check with your AAPC local chapter to find scheduled meetings and local events that will provide CEUs. Yes, it does require a bit of legwork, but your medical billing and coding career depends on keeping up with the latest medical information.
