Medical Billing and Coding Specialist: Career Interview

If you are considering a career in medical billing and coding, here’s an article that may help you make the final decision.

This in depth interview with two medical billing and coding specialists will answer all the questions that are rolling around in your head. From “What made you choose this field?” to “What level of satisfaction do you have in your career?” You’ll get the inside scoop right here.

Question: What sparked your interest about the medical coding and billing field?

Katie: I had been a waitress at a local restaurant chain and wanted to be at home with my children. I was tired of working the evening shift and was ready for a change. The only thing keeping me in the restaurant business was the fact that the money was good. I was looking for a career that would allow me to work from home and still make the same amount of money (or better) that I was making as a waitress. A friend of mine is a medical billing and coding specialist. She is a single parent and works from home. It sounded perfect.

Amanda: I had been working in an office setting and didn’t really see any room for advancement. I hadn’t worked in the medical field before, but had always been interested in it. My office skills, combined with my interest in medicine, made a career as a medical billing and coding specialist seem perfect for me.

Question: How did you decide on a medical billing and coding training course?

Katie: Since I have a friend who is a medical billing and coding specialist and she had already researched schools in our area, I asked for her advice. I attended a local community college that let me complete the course at a comfortable pace.

Amanda: I researched my online options since I had a full time job at the time. I took the entire course online with a school that is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The school let me make monthly payments and the entire course was less than $3,000.

Question: What did you like most about your medical billing and coding training?

Katie: I enjoyed the medical terminology part of the course. Although it required a lot of memorization, it was like learning another language. Now I have skills that not just everyone has. I have valuable career opportunities.

Amanda: The flexibility of the course, along with the ability to take the course at my own pace from home was the best part for me. The course itself was very well laid out and easy to follow, but without the ability to take the medical billing and coding course from home, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Question: Did your medical billing and coding training prepare you for the real work world?

Katie: Working from home in a new career can be a bit overwhelming. I’m so glad I paid attention during the reimbursement portion of the training especially. I work with insurance offices on a daily basis. The medical coding and billing training gave me the confidence I needed to finally pursue a career from home.

Amanda: Absolutely. I work at a pediatrician’s office and even on my first day there, I could easily find the files and the charts that were needed. This was all due to the fact that I understand medical coding.

Question: What is your advice for someone considering becoming a medical billing and coding specialist?

Katie: If you are able to multitask, love people, and want the freedom of working from home, this is definitely a wonderful career choice for you. Get the education you need, either online or at your local college or training center, and go for it!

Amanda: For those who want to be in the field of medicine, without being directly involved in caring for patients, this is perfect. I love working with the patients in my office, the professionalism of the industry, and of course, the pay rate. I would recommend medical billing and coding to anyone who is interested in the medical field.

Well, there are your answers. With the proper training, medical billing and coding is a rewarding and exciting career choice.
